House Building
The apartment house ZILLMANN & RIECHE is a modern
two-story "concrete cube" built during GDR times. It
is part of a housing estate which consists of flat-roof
apartment houses and is situated on the outskirts of
Sondershausen.
The constructor’s preference for unostentatious func-
tional design was realized by using fair-face concrete
walls in the interior areas and by coloring the walls’
surfaces only sporadically.
In addition, extensive glazing allows a pleasant outlook
as well as a delightful look inside. The building’s spaci-
ousness is also accentuated by flying bridges connect-
ing the individual floors. Besides, the solid interior and
exterior concrete walls (fair-face concrete quality) serve
as a kind of reservoir. Buffering of the air moisture is re-
gulated by plasterboard walls.
The outer appearance of the building is marked by its
prominent upper story which underlines the building’s
dynamic architecture. As common, the upper story cor-
bel serves both as car shelter and rain protection.
